Coated insert for processing titanium alloy medical parts

In the medical parts manufacturing industry, the main difference is that more than 90% of the implants are made of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V, which is an unfamiliar metal for this industry. Although some stainless steels are used, surgeons prefer titanium alloys because of the strength-to-weight ratio of titanium alloys and adhesion to human tissue.

Titanium alloys are more difficult to machine than the familiar iron metals and aluminum alloys. We can think of it as a stainless steel, but its higher strength, fiberized chips, are more likely to chip at the cutting and cutting points of the tool. Carbide tools do not require coating, because processing titanium alloys does not have a chemical reaction like processing iron, but it is necessary to keep the edge sharp. In order to prevent overheating during high speed machining, PVD coated inserts such as IC908-IC907-IC1008 are recommended.

ISCAR has developed a series of small-part machining inserts for titanium alloys. Their common feature is that they have very sharp edges, ground or finely ground surfaces for super-light surface finish without built-up edge . In fact, it is available in the hard alloy IC908, which has been used in the aerospace industry for decades. Up to now, ISCAR has a line of small-titanium alloy processing, including end mills with super sharp edges, which have bowl-shaped and ground surfaces; solid carbide drills are as small as 0.8 mm in diameter, with machined steel parts. Groove type and reamer groove type for processing titanium alloy; four blade blades with aggressive WF or MD chipbreaker and JETCUT cutting blade for processing titanium alloy; upcoming TANG-GRIP weight for processing titanium alloy Load the self-clamping grooving knife.
